Why Classic Pieces Matter in Your Wardrobe
Have you got tonnes of clothing and yet find you still have nothing to wear? Join the club! Chances are you’re in need of a closet overhaul. We’re not suggesting all the fun be taken out of buying clothes, sometimes you just have to get that sequined dress or that 70’s flared jumpsuit, even if you never wear it and it stays in your wardrobe for years, we know one day it’ll have its chance to shine. In the meantime, having a closet of classic staples that can be interchanged and worn no matter the occasion, is something we highly recommend!
There are certain essential items of clothing that just never go out of style and are guaranteed to see you through many a season. We’ll break down the key staples we believe every woman should have in her wardrobe and talk you through styling, fit and quality to look out for!
Classic Tops
When it comes to choosing some basic tops that work with a number of outfits, we recommend having a couple of blouses, suitable for work and other formal occasions, a couple of camisoles and tank tops, for warmer weather and casual occasions, and a couple of t shirts that can be dressed up or down for smart casual dressing. When it comes to colour we suggest sticking with neutral tones, such as white, brown, black or even navy as these colours tend to work well across the board and rarely clash. A white shirt is a must have for any wardrobe in our opinion, so make sure to include one in your staples.

When it comes to fit, it’s ultimately down to your personal preference but we suggest opting for tops that are comfortable and yet fitted, there’s nothing worse that clothing that’s too tight and clothing that is too loose will hide your natural shape and can make you look boxy.
When it comes to detail, keep it simple, less is definitely more, basics can always be styled with accessories to personalise and add to your look. When it comes to quality, it really comes down to how much you’re looking to spend, keep in mind that higher quality pieces tend to last longer and the fabric tends to be more comfortable to wear. We love natural fibres such as cotton, linen and bamboo as they’re especially breathable and are more environmentally friendly.
Classic Bottoms
Classic Pants
Having a few pairs of reliable pants and skirts really helps to make up your wardrobe. When it comes to choosing some basic essentials that will take you from casual day looks to cocktail hour, we suggest having a couple of pairs of dress pants in black and beige. Once again when it comes to fit you’re after a comfortable, yet tailored look. Depending on your shape, you can opt for high waisted to flatter your curves or a lower cut for those with more of a column shape.
Classic Skirts
When it comes to skirts, having a couple of midi and maxi skirts are great for smart casual looks that can then be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Opt for materials such as jersey, bamboo or cotton so that you’re covered for both cold and warmer weather. Natural colours here such as black, navy or beige are your friends as they’re not only versatile but tend to be more flattering.
Classic Jeans
Finally, where would any of us be without a couple of pairs of trusty jeans. For those of us who practically live in them, having the right pair, that not only flatters, but are easy and comfortable to wear, is at the top of the list of must-have wardrobe essentials. Jeans can sometimes be a point of contention, with some people preferring 100% denim cotton, whereas others like a bit of stretch and a cotton-elastane blend. We recommend a balance of a 2-3% elastane blend so they don’t lose that distinct feel of jeans and you avoid having to get horizontal or contort unnaturally to get into them. Having a classic light or dark blue pair along with a black pair for more formal wear will ensure you cover all the bases, but feel free to get a few extra pairs as, “I wish I didn’t have so many jeans”, is a statement yet to be uttered in human history.
Classic Jumpers and Jackets
Classic Jumpers
Who doesn’t love a comfy jumper that you can snuggle up in? When it comes to essential jumpers it’s hard to go past a solid knit. Pair with jeans, slacks or a skirt and tights, the knit jumper is as versatile as it gets! The great thing about knit jumpers is that you can stray away from neutral tones and opt for more funky colours and they’ll still look fantastic with everything! We recommend quality natural fibres such as cotton and wool as they will stand the test of time, offer more protection in the colder months and most importantly have that snuggle factor.
Classic Cardigans
Looking for that extra layer of comfort, when things are just a bit cooler but not all out jumper weather, then there’s nothing better than a throw on cardi! Wrap yourself up in a long cardi and layer for all seasons. Once again, feel free to colour it up!
Classic Jackets
When it comes to staple items denim jackets are an absolute essential! Great for casual to smart casual wear, denim jackets make any outfit look trendy, whether worn over a basic dress, pants or a tee, denim jackets are the perfect way to give your outfit that extra lift. Traditional blue always looks great but feel free to step out of the shell and opt for a more colourful statement piece, just make sure to balance with neutral tones.
When it comes to classic wardrobe staples, a well-cut blazer is a must-have. Effortlessly bridging the gap between casual and polished, a classic blazer instantly elevates any outfit. Whether layered over a simple tee, paired with tailored pants, or worn with a dress for a more refined finish.

Classic Coats
Saving the best till last, a proper coat is something that you simply cannot live without! Arguably one of the most important staples in your closet, coats are where you don’t skimp on cost. A good quality coat can last a lifetime and should be seen as an investment piece. We suggest playing it safe and going with a classic black coat as they can be worn with absolutely everything, dressed up or down and will never go out of style. However if you’re someone who needs a bit of colour in their life we understand, go with your gut and what suits you!
Classic Shoes
Classic Sneakers
If you’re anything like us you could give Imelda Marcoss a run for her money when it comes to shoes. When clearing out your closet to make room for classic pieces, shoes are the exception, as like jeans, you can never really have enough can you? Having said that, there are certain shoes that go with everything and can be worn with a number of outfits that are essential wardrobe additions. Black and white sneakers are a popular choice and for good reason, they can be dressed up or down with ease, are on trend and are a far more comfortable option than high heels. Look for supportive shoes with a decent sole and style with pants or midi/maxi skirts for office chic or with jeans or shorts for a more casual look.
Classic Boots
There are certain things we simply can’t live without, like coffee, chocolate, wine and when it comes to your wardrobe, boots! Boots can lift any outfit into a sexy stylish ensemble that’s perfect for those colder months. We recommend having a couple of pairs, one in black and one in tan, up to you whether you go ankle, knee or thigh high as no matter your choice boots will work with anything in your closet. Pair with stockings and a skirt, dresses, jeans or even shorts if you’re channeling Daisy Duke and you’re good to go walking!
