We are incredibly humbled to support and partner with Save the Children, the world’s leading independent organisation for children. This global organisation is helping improve the lives of children not only in Australia, but all around the world, by giving kids a powerful voice to champion their own rights.

Save The Children

Save the Children goes to the toughest places to save children from earthquakes, cyclones, conflict and disease. Where children are being exploited, neglected or abused, they protect them from harm. Save the Children work in partnership with local communities, all levels of government, other NGOs, community and advocacy groups, corporate partners and individual donors to create change for children, families and their communities.

How is birdsnest able to help?

A key fundraising arm for Save the Children is their network of Op Shops, situated in locations all around Australia. These shops rely on volunteers and donations to help create better lives for children living in Australia and overseas.

Since our partnership started in May 2021 we have donated a total of 258KG of clothing to Save the Children. These donations go straight to their Op Shop stores where they are sold to raise money for programs that help vulnerable children all over the world.

Our ‘Nest’ is full of mothers, fathers, grandmother’s, aunties and uncles who want to see all children and young people given the opportunity to learn, grow, dream big, feel safe and supported. This charity holds a special place in our hearts, and we continue to look for opportunities to further contribute to their fundraising, programs and crisis appeals.

Save the Children: Gaza Emergency Appeal

Children in Gaza are cut off from the basics they need to survive, and over 1.7 million people have been displaced. There is no clean water, leaving children at risk of dying from severe dehydration. Many people are being forced to turn to contaminated water sources, leaving them vulnerable to illness or an outbreak of waterborne diseases. Children’s lives and futures are at risk.

Save The Children are already responding through partners, distributing water and hygiene products, and preparing food parcels for families -

  • Delivering further Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services for children and caregivers.
  • Deploying our Emergency Health Unit and procuring essential medical equipment.
  • Distributing warm clothes and blankets, and more cash and vouchers so families can buy food, medicines and any other essentials.
  • Ensuring children continue to have access to education, by setting up temporary learning spaces and repairing damaged schools.

You can donate directly to this appeal here.

The little boy in the blue t-shirt is called Rami, he’s 7. He and his family were severely injured when a bomb hit the house where they were sheltering in Nuseirat, in the central area of the Gaza strip. Five members of their extended family were killed in the attack. Also pictured is Rami’s father Jamal* (35) and his sister Sana* (10).

The little girl in the yellow dress is Mona (10 months) and was lucky to escape when the war broke out, and she and her parents found refuge in a tent in Rafah. Mona has a cancerous tumour in her left eye and Save the Children has provided cash assistance to the family and will also cover the cost of Mona’s third chemotherapy treatment.

Save the Children: Supporting children caught in conflict in Ukraine

Save the Children Australia supports some of the hardest to reach children and young people around the world. Currently, they are doing some incredible work for Ukrainian children and families, both inside Ukraine and those who have fled. Working alongside local partners and the Ukraine government, Save the Children have provided life-saving assistance such as food and water, cash transfers, and safe spaces, to make sure children and families impacted by this crisis have the support they need and are currently focused on providing digital education solutions so that children and young people that have fled conflict in Ukraine can continue to learn on the move.

So far in the Ukraine, Save the Children has:

  • Supported over 5,000 children with protection services and is running 11 Child Friendly Spaces that provide a safe and supportive environment for children to socialise, play, and be children again.
  •  Currently rehabilitating 4 damaged schools in Northern and Eastern part of Ukraine.
  • Supported over 35,000 families with cash and vouchers to help them buy the food, clothes, and medicine they need.
  • Supported over 40,000 families with access to medical care by providing essential medical equipment, supplies, and expertise to hospitals and mobile health teams, with a particular focus on maternal and new-born health.

When the war broke out in Ukraine, we all felt hopeless. Understanding the invaluable work that Save the Children were doing on the ground meant we felt confident donating funds to their appeal knowing that it would go to children in the direst need of support. So far we have donated $5000 however we are aiming to raise at least another $5000 through our birdsnest Market Day.

At least twice a year, birdsnest hosts a physical Market Day in our nest where we offer samples, seconds and some preloved styles for sale. Each market day we have partnered with a different charity organisation to raise funds for an important cause. In September 2022, we’re excited to commit 50% of all sales  from our birdsnest Market day to Save the Children to support children affected by conflict in Ukraine.

You can also donate your clothing directly to Save the Children Op Shops through their reuse, repurpose, recycle program. Quality items go to their Save Op Shops to be sold to raise money for programming, and any items past their wearable date will be regenerated, giving them a second life and keeping them out of landfill.
